A young man in Debidwar, Cumilla, has been accused of killing his mother and six-month-old niece following a dispute over his chronic leg pain and their intervention in his attempt to commit suicide. His sister-in-law was also critically injured in the incident. The event took place around 8:30 AM on Monday in the South Para area of ​​Barashalghar village, under the Barashalghar Union of the upazila.

The deceased have been identified as Mst. Firoza Begum (62)—wife of the late Farid Miah and mother of the accused, Emon—and Emon’s six-month-old niece, Israt. The injured sister-in-law, Rabeya Begum, has been admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

According to police and local residents, Emon suffered a severe leg injury while playing football about two years ago, damaging the ligaments. Since then, he had been unable to walk normally. Despite undergoing treatment and two surgeries, he continued to suffer from leg pain and mobility issues.

Locals stated that Emon had become mentally distressed due to the recent worsening of his leg pain. When he attempted suicide on Sunday night, his mother, Mst. Firoza Begum, and sister-in-law, Rabeya Begum, intervened to stop him.

Police reported that, following this, Emon got into an argument with his mother and sister-in-law on Monday morning. At one point, he hacked Mst. Firoza Begum with a sharp *da* (billhook) found in the house. It is alleged that he then snatched the six-month-old infant, Israt, from his mother and slammed her to the ground. When his sister-in-law, Rabeya Begum, rushed to save them, she was also beaten.

Hearing their screams, locals arrived at the scene, rescued the three victims, and took them to the Debidwar Upazila Health Complex. The attending physician declared Firoza Begum and the infant Israt dead. The critically injured Rabeya Begum was transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

After the incident, locals detained Emon and informed the police, who subsequently took him into custody.

Md. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Debidwar Police Station, confirmed the incident. He stated that during initial questioning, Emon revealed he had attempted suicide due to leg pain and committed the act out of resentment after being prevented from doing so. His mental state is also being examined.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) further added that arrangements are underway to send the bodies of the two deceased to Comilla Medical College Hospital for autopsies. Legal action is being taken regarding the incident.
