The death toll from dengue in the country has surpassed 200 this year. Six more people died from the disease in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00 AM on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths this year to 201. Of these, 104 deaths occurred in September alone—the highest monthly figure recorded so far this year. During this period, 1,868 patients were admitted to hospitals.

This information was disclosed in the Directorate General of Health Services’ (DGHS) regular report on dengue on Wednesday.

The report states that 173 patients were admitted to hospitals in the Dhaka North City Corporation area, 179 in the Dhaka South City Corporation area, and 405 in various hospitals across the Dhaka division outside the two city corporation areas. Admissions in other divisions included 178 in Barishal, 317 in Chattogram, 280 in Khulna, 113 in Mymensingh, 156 in Rajshahi, 59 in Rangpur, and 8 in Sylhet.

According to the bulletin, 1,557 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment during the same period. So far this year, 67,367 people have been hospitalized due to dengue, with 62,117 of them recovering and returning home.

The DGHS has been maintaining records of hospital admissions and deaths related to dengue since 2000. The highest number of hospitalizations—321,179—was recorded in 2023, which also saw the highest death toll at 1,705. Last year, over 400 people died from dengue, and approximately 102,000 patients were hospitalized.
