As a government elected by the people, the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, and State Minister Mir Shahe Alam have pledged to work while ensuring accountability.
They made this pledge on Friday afternoon (September 2) at a discussion meeting regarding the various development activities of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), held at the department’s auditorium in Kakrail, Dhaka.
Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan stated that the government is prepared to listen to constructive criticism. If any errors occur in government operations and are pointed out, the government will take steps to rectify them. However, he urged against criticism based on false information or propaganda. The Minister also called upon everyone to play a responsible role in maintaining a democratic environment and stability.
He remarked that officials and employees at all levels of the government are servants of the people. The collective goal should be the welfare of the country’s people and establishing Bangladesh as a developed and respected nation on the global stage. He urged officials to continue serving the public with dedication, even amidst limited resources.
Speaking as a special guest at the meeting, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam said that the activities of the Department of Public Health Engineering should not rely solely on development projects but should be conducted based on the needs of people at the grassroots level. He emphasized strengthening the maintenance of existing infrastructure, converting waste into resources, and reducing groundwater usage through long-term planning.
He noted the need for a separate fund and necessary allocations for regular maintenance at the field level of the Department of Public Health Engineering. Simultaneously, he stressed the importance of initiatives to produce fuel from waste in large cities and to implement low-cost waste management systems in smaller municipalities and upazilas. The State Minister also spoke about reducing the strain on groundwater by increasing the supply of safe water through the treatment of river and pond water.
Md. Shahidul Hasan, Secretary of the Local Government Division; Md. Zamanur Rahman, Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering; and other senior officials from the ministry and the department were present at the discussion meeting.
