Mahmudur Rahman Manna, president of Nagorika Oikya, said that this movement was not just for votes. This movement has been to create an environment where the democratic rights of the people, the right to vote, to give power to the elected representatives on the basis of fairness.
He said these things in his speech as the chief guest at a discussion on ‘Future of Democracy in the Current Political Context and People’s Expectations from the Interim Government’ at the National Press Club on Thursday.
Manna said, the party that is most responsible should say I want this reform. If you think I can do this reform in 6 months, then tell me I can do it this way. Otherwise, if you say, I am the big party, I am the one saying, I have the right to power… That is right, if there is a vote, maybe you will win. But the movement that took place today was not for such votes. The movement fought to create an environment in which the people were democratic, had the right to vote, and put power in the hands of fairly elected representatives. If you can come united in this fight, then it will be.
The first stage victory has been achieved, what now – Manna said, we should just overthrow the dictatorial government, he did not fight. We have said that we are fighting to change the government and the country. We are fighting to change the government and administration. The government has changed, now the next thing has to be done.
Youth society, student society – we want to build a new Bangladesh. Some of us say democratic country, some say humanitarian country, some say developed country. Let’s say one by one – this is our goal. But when they said, want to build a new state, then the entire nation fought together today.
The president of Nagorika Oikya said that the new Bangladesh will be a welfare state, a democratic state, a humane state, as beautiful a state as it can be; In the state in which I can live, I will get relief. Dictatorship stands in the way of building such a country. They didn’t let people speak, they didn’t give them the right to vote, they ended democracy. If we want to form that state today, then such a democratic system will be needed. That democratic system will require electoral system. Elections that are acceptable to all, will not be questioned.
Manna said, if you look at the last two elections, the police have robbed the most votes. Where is the police now? Standing in front of public outrage, now they are afraid to sit in the police station. If a few IG, DIG, big officers are changed, will the police change? This police still takes bribes. So far this government has not started any reforms. IG replaced the new IG, call it reform? DIG instead of DIG. These are not reforms. I want qualitative reforms. He also said that the entire police system, bureaucracy, BGB should be fixed. At the same time, the price of goods should also be reduced. The problems of the people must be solved.
BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Bangladesh BJP Chairman Barrister Andaliv Rahman Parth, BNP Joint Editor Syed Emran Saleh Prince also spoke in the discussion chaired by Human Rights and Social Development Organization Chairman Osman Gani.
