Six members of two families died in separate landslides in Rohingya camps of Sadar Upazila and Ukhia Upazila of Cox’s Bazar District. The accident happened on Friday (September 13) at 3 am.

A mother and two daughters died in a landslide in South Dikkool area of ​​Jhelongja Union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila. And three brothers died in Hakimpara Rohingya camp number 14 of Ukhia upazila.

Ghiyas Uddin Zhiku, the former chairman of Jhilongja Union Parishad, said that at around 3 o’clock in the morning, the mountain collapsed on Mizanur Rahman’s house in Dakshin Dikkul with a sudden loud noise. Four members of the family, including the head of the house, were crushed to death. Neighbors immediately managed to rescue Mizanur alive, but later removed the ground and rescued the other three dead.

The deceased are Mizanur Rahman’s wife Akhi Moni (21) and their two daughters Miha Jannat Naima (5) and Latifa Islam (1).

Mizanur Rahman, a member of Ward No. 2 of Jhelongja Union Parishad, said that Mizan’s house is at the foot of a steep hill. Heavy rain that started on Thursday (September 12) afternoon softened the ground. Later in the night, during continuous heavy rain, the mountain collapsed on the house.

Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Nilufa Yasmin Chowdhury visited the scene affected by the landslide. Later he gave a donation of 75 thousand rupees to the victim’s family.

Additional Commissioner of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission Mohammad Samchu-Douza Nayan said, due to continuous heavy rains, three residential houses were destroyed by landslides in Hakim Para Rohingya Camp No. 14 in Ukhiya. Three brothers of the same family died due to mudslide. They are Abdur Rahim, Abdul Hafeez and Abdul Waheed, sons of Kabir Ahmed of E-2 block of the camp. After receiving information, local volunteers carried out rescue operations in the destroyed houses and removed the soil and recovered the bodies of three people.

Cox’s Bazar has been experiencing moderate to sometimes heavy rain since last Wednesday. This has caused severe flooding in more than half a hundred villages including the district town since Thursday. Many houses have been flooded by the rain and landslides coming down from the mountains. It has created suffering in public life.

Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office assistant meteorologist Abdul Hannan said that the total rainfall in 27 hours from 6 am on Thursday to 9 am on Friday was 401 mm. This is the highest rainfall record in a single day this season.
