During Durga Puja, demand for hilsa increases in West Bengal, India. Hilsa is also considered by many as one of the accessories of worship. Before this Durga Puja, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina used to send hilsa to the people of Kolkata. However, this time Bangladesh will not send hilsa to West Bengal for puja.

This has raised fears that the price of hilsa will increase in Kolkata. Besides, they will also be deprived of the taste of Padma Hilsa of Bangladesh.

Farida Akhtar, Fish and Livestock Adviser of the Interim Government, said that it will be ensured that Hindus and other citizens of Bangladesh can eat hilsa during this Durgo Festival. The people of the country will be given priority over India.

In an interview with Indian media News-18 on Friday (September 13), the fisheries advisor said, “We apologize, but we cannot send any hilsa to India. It is an expensive fish. We have seen that people of our country cannot eat hilsa. Because all are shipped to India. Those that remain are expensive. We also celebrate Durgotsavam. Our people can also enjoy (eat) it.”

Fisheries advisor said, India does not need to create any issue with Hilsa. If they want good relations with Bangladesh, they should resolve the issue of Teesta water distribution.
