875 people were killed from July 16 to September 9 in the quota reform movement and student uprising. Most of the people died in the shooting. 18 to 20 July and 4 to 7 August—748 people were killed in these seven days. In addition, more than 30,000 people were injured in the coup.

The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) reported this information by analyzing the data on casualties across the country in various programs and student uprisings led by the anti-discrimination student movement to demand quota reform.

Human rights organization HRSS announced the review report in a press release today. According to the circular, this report has been prepared by analyzing the data sent by 12 national dailies, HRSS’s data-research unit and volunteers from across the country. According to the organization, the credible information they are getting from mass media, hospitals and various media, they think that the death toll will be at least 1000.
Sheikh Hasina’s government fell on August 5 in the face of a student uprising. On that day he left the country and went to India.

The HRSS report analyzes the age, occupation, cause of death of a portion of the deceased. It said 327 people died from July 16 to August 3 and 548 from August 4 to September 9 (many died later while undergoing treatment). A whopping 77 percent of those killed were shot. 19 to 30 year olds died more. This rate is 53 percent. And by the age of 30, the death rate stands at 70 percent. Students accounted for the highest number of casualties, at 52 percent. Most were killed in shootings and police attacks.
According to the report, the BCL was ordered to attack the protesting students. Along with the police, RAB, Ansar, SWAT, BGB and army were deployed. Law enforcement forces used lethal weapons like helicopter gunships, tear gas shells, AK-style assault rifles on the protesting students.

After Sheikh Hasina fled the country, police stations (more than 5000), government buildings and minority buildings were attacked, vandalized, arson and looted across the country.
Most of the victims were in their 30s

According to the HRSS, the names of 743 of the 875 dead have been identified. Among them are students, workers, journalists, professionals, members of law and order forces, children and women, along with leaders and supporters of most political parties. At least 107 children, 6 journalists, 51 law enforcement personnel and 13 women and girls were killed in the agitation.
Of the 875 killed, 619 had information about their age, HRSS said. Among the dead are people of almost all ages, including 4-year-old Ahad and 6-year-old Riya Gop. Of the 619, 107 (17 percent) are children (under 18). In addition, 327 (53 percent) of 19 to 30-year-old or young people, 158 (26 percent) of 31 to 50-year-old or middle-aged people, and 27 (4 percent) of over 50 years of age have been mentioned. That is, 70 percent of the 619 people are under 30 years of age.
According to the report analyzing the occupation-wise information, information about the occupation of 352 persons among the deceased has been found. Among them, 184 students (52 percent), 70 workers (20 percent), and 51 law enforcement personnel (5 percent).
Killed by multiple shots

According to the report, a total of 772 deaths were reported. Among them, 599 people or 77 percent were shot dead. 61 (8 percent) died of burns. 85 people (11 percent) were beaten to death. 27 (4 percent) died of other causes.

The report also gives information on how many people were killed in which category. It can be seen that out of 875 people killed, the maximum number of 540 people were killed in Dhaka Division. Apart from this, 91 people were killed in Chittagong, 81 people in Khulna, 64 people in Rajshahi, 38 people in Mymensingh, 29 people in Rangpur, 20 people in Sylhet and 13 people in Barisal.
