Very heavy rain first caused disaster in Cox’s Bazar. Then Khulna and Barisal started. Yesterday Sunday, heavy rain appeared in the central part of the country including the capital Dhaka. Till last night, it was located across West Bengal, India, including the coastal areas of the country. Due to the heavy rains that have come to two-thirds of the country, eight districts have also experienced flash floods. 3 million people have been affected by it.
Meteorologists said that the damage is due to the deep depression that has emerged from the Bay of Bengal. Till seven o’clock yesterday evening, it was spread from the central part of Bangladesh to the coastal area. In this, the water of 52 out of 116 points of different rivers of the country has been seen to rise.
Due to heavy rain, the water level of rivers in Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna divisions may rise for another day or two. However, meteorologists said that the rain may reduce from tomorrow Tuesday. There is no danger of new downpours as the rain has decreased in the Indian part upstream of Bangladesh. As a result, the flood situation that was created by inundating the lower areas of Chittagong and Sylhet coasts may improve.
3 million people in the face of loss-
According to the preliminary assessment of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, the heavy rains and flash floods of the last three days have affected 3 million people in the country. So far 4 lakh 40 thousand families are floating in flood water. This loss has occurred in 357 unions of eight districts of the country.
According to the agency’s observations, the flood-affected districts include Cox’s Bazar, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali and Chittagong. In addition to heavy rains, flash floods have occurred in these districts due to floods from India upstream.
According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, there will be more rain in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal divisions today as well. Rain will decrease in Chittagong, Sylhet and Rangpur. However, rain may continue across the country till this afternoon. Rain may taper off in the afternoon. The seaports of the country have been asked to put down the warning signal number 3 and the river ports have been asked to lower the warning signal.
In this regard, meteorologist Bajlur Rashid of the Department of Meteorology said yesterday that the monsoon is still strong. And the land deep depression is active over large areas of Bangladesh including West Bengal of India. That is why it has been raining heavily for three days. From Monday afternoon, the rain will reduce and sunshine may be seen across the country.
