About 300 prisoners have escaped from a prison in Nigeria after severe flooding. They escaped early last week after the walls of the prison collapsed in what was essentially a devastating flood.

According to a Reuters report on Monday, the security forces are conducting an operation to recapture the escaped prisoners.

According to reports, 281 inmates escaped after a wall collapsed at a prison in Maiduguri, northeast Nigeria, early last week following devastating floods, prison authorities said on Sunday.

The Nigeria Correctional Service spokesman, Umar Abubakar, said in a statement that seven of the inmates who escaped were recaptured during operations by security agencies.

He also said that the operation to rescue the remaining escaped prisoners is going on.

The floods have killed at least 30 people and affected another 1 million, according to the African country’s emergency agency. Besides, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and have been forced to go to shelter camps.
