The investigation committee formed by the administration has identified eight people in connection with the thrashing of a man suspected of being a thief in Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall (FH Hall) of Dhaka University (DU). They are all resident students of that hall.
Six of the eight identified have already been arrested. Police said that they gave a confessional statement in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka on Friday.
Last Wednesday night, a young man named Tofazzal Hossain was beaten to death with a stump in the guest room of FH Hall. The day after the incident, the administration formed a seven-member investigation committee. The committee submitted its report at 11 pm that day. The university administration filed a case at the capital’s Shahbag police station on Thursday afternoon regarding the beating to death. In that case, the police arrested six students of FH Hall with the help of the Proctoral Team on Thursday.
Inquiry formed in FH Hall case-
Several members of the committee told the media yesterday that the eight people were identified by analyzing the statements of the students who witnessed the incident and the CCTV footage.
The names and identities of those eight people have been mentioned in the investigation committee report. They are Md. of the 2021-22 academic year of Institute of Nutrition and Food Science. Mottakin Sakin Shah, Department of Physics 2018-19 academic year Md. Jalal Miah, Suman Miah of the 2021-22 academic year of Soil, Water and Environment Department, Al Hossain Sajjad of the 2020-21 academic year of Geography and Environment Department, Md. of the 2018-19 academic year of Mathematics Department. Ahsan Ullah, Department of Botany for the academic year 2020-21. Firoz Kabir, Md. of the 2020-21 academic year of the Department of Physics. Abdus Samad and Wajibul Alam, a student of the 2021-22 academic year of the Department of Oceanography. Apart from Firoz Kabir and Abdus Samad, six others have been arrested among them.
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the names of the eight people identified. Those eight were directly involved in the crime. Some recommendations are given in the inquiry report. Based on this report, initially these eight people will be temporarily expelled from the university. Later the university authorities will make a committee and go towards the final arrangement.
Confessions of six people-
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said in a message that the six students of the arrested FH Hall gave a confessional statement in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He said that after the statement, the six arrested have been sent to jail.
Pointing out that the DMP is investigating the Tofajjal murder case with great importance and intensively, Talebur Rahman further said that police activities are continuing to arrest the other accused involved in this incident and bring them under the law.
