In Habiganj, a person is firing a shotgun at the students and the crowd during the anti-discrimination movement with the Awami League leaders and workers. That person is former MP Abu Zahir of Habiganj-3 constituency and policeman Mahbub Ahmed (wearing a blue helmet and police jacket). On August 4, he was seen shooting at Tinkona Pukurpar area of the city.
Recently, when a related video spread on social media, the agitators demanded justice for the gunman. Along with that, they expressed their anger that even after one and a half months of the incident, he was not brought under the law. Senior police officials say that even though the gunman is a member of the police, he has to follow the rules. He can’t shoot like that for a team. Doing so would be a violation of the law.
Agitator and student of Habiganj Brindavan Government College, Faiz Ahmed said, ‘We students protested in Habiganj city on August 2 and 4. In these two processions, Awami League President and Member of Parliament Abu Zahir led the leaders and workers of the party shot at ordinary students. At that time MP’s gunman Mahbub Ahmed was seen openly shooting at us with a shotgun in police uniform. However, he has not come under the law even in the last one and a half months. Masuk Mia, another student of the same college, said, “We have the evidence of how the policeman Mahbub fired at us. He fired with a helmet on his head, so that no one would recognize him. But we were able to identify him easily by looking at his physical structure, police uniform and government pistol kept on his waist. Besides, the video of his shooting can be verified by law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, Mahbub Ahmed was transferred from Habiganj and went to Rangamati last August after the complaint was made. According to police sources, he has been connected to the district police line.
Habiganj Police Superintendent’s office and police line sources said that after the formation of the Awami League government in 2008, the former MP of Habiganj-3 (Habiganj Sadar and Lakhai) constituency and district Awami League president Md. Abu Zahir applied to the Ministry of Interior for a gunman for his security. In view of that application, the district police assigned constable Mahbub Ahmed of Chowdhury Bazar police outpost in the city. Mahbub served as his gunman for 16 years. Last on August 22, he was transferred from Habiganj to Rangamati district.
Habiganj district headquarters was very heated in the quota reform movement last July. Eyewitnesses and agitating students said that when the agitating students reached Tinkona Pukurpar area of the city on August 4 afternoon, the leaders and workers of Awami League and its affiliated organizations started shooting at the students. At that time gunman Mahbub Ahmed was seen shooting at the students with a shotgun. A youth named Ripon Sheel (32) was killed during the clash that day. Apart from this, 20 to 25 people were injured.
Earlier, on August 2, the leaders and workers of Awami League and its affiliated organizations fired on the protesting students in the district town.
At that time too, Mahbub was seen shooting with a shotgun wearing a helmet and police jacket. At that time, he had an official revolver on his waist. A man named Mostak Ahmed (35) was killed in the firing that day. In addition, fifty people were injured.
In these two incidents, two murder cases have been registered against 300 people including former member of parliament Abu Zahir in Habiganj Sadar Police Station. However, Mahbub Ahmed was not brought under the law even though he was shot publicly.
When the accused Mahbub Ahmed was contacted on his mobile phone, he cut the connection saying he was busy with work and assured to talk later. After several attempts to contact him, there was no response.
On the other hand, the officer-in-charge of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station said that he did not receive any written complaint regarding the firing of gunman Mahbub. (OC) Mohammad Nurul Alam. He said that the police will investigate the complaint and take legal action. The gunman is one of the police member He also has to use weapons and bullets in accordance with the rules.
