China test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) after more than 4 decades. After this incident, concern has arisen in the international community. In particular, Japan, Australia and New Zealand have strongly protested China’s ICBM test.
China, however, said it was a “regular” test and the missile was not fired at any country or target. Chinese media also reported that the concerned countries were informed about the launch of the missile. But Japan said it had no prior information and expressed concern. Australia and New Zealand responded similarly.
It is believed that the ICBM can strike at a distance of more than 5,500 km, and China is capable of hitting the mainland of the United States with it.
According to China’s Ministry of Defense, China launched a long-range missile at 9:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, which successfully hit the predetermined target. The missile is believed to have hit somewhere in the South Pacific.
However, Western analysts believe that China’s ICBM test is not part of a normal routine test. Because China usually conducts such tests in the Taklamakan desert in the Xinjiang region inside the country. The last ICBM test was conducted by China in the 1980s.
