BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed deep concern and protest over the going to jail of Mahmudur Rahman, Acting Editor of Amar Desh Patrika. He said, Mahmudur Rahman is a traditional journalist of the country. He suffered terrible torture during the deposed dictatorial regime. He was physically assaulted and bloodied. A violent attack by fascism has conspired to endanger his life.
Mahmudur Rahman’s release has been demanded from all quarters. In this situation, the advisor of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs spoke about Mahmudur Rahman in a video message on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday. Asif Nazrul
The legal adviser said that Mahmudur Rahman Bhai started the intellectual struggle against the fascist regime of Sheikh Hasina in this country. For this he had to suffer a lot of persecution. Nothing compares to that. He was punished by the fascist Sheikh Hasina government in a bogus case. He was punished in his absence. The merits of this case can also be questioned.
He said that the trial was completed in this case. He was already punished. A few days before he came to Bangladesh, an inadmissible case was also filed against his wife Shreddeya Vari. He filed an appeal seeking a stay of sentence in that case. It doesn’t occur to me. This application goes to the Ministry of Home Affairs. When the Ministry of Home Affairs sought our opinion, we recommended positive emphasis. Based on our recommendation, Mahmudur Rahman Bhai’s wife’s sentence was suspended and she was given an opportunity to appeal.
He also said that in the case in which Mahmudur Rahman Bhai was sentenced and is in jail today, in fact another prominent journalist Shafiq Rehman was also sentenced in this case. He filed an appeal seeking suspension of the sentence in this case. It was approved based on the recommendation of the Law Ministry. But Mahmudur Rahman Bhai did not do it.
The legal advisor also said, you all know that he is a very strong self-respecting and patriotic person. Because of his personality, he may have thought that he would not apply for a stay of sentence. Or for some other reason I don’t know. However, he did not apply to appeal as a free man with the sentence suspended. As a result, there was no opportunity for the ministry or the government to do this.
