71 villages of Sherpur are flooded, nearly 40 thousand families are under water

In Sherpur’s Nalitabari upazila, 71 villages of four unions have been inundated again due to torrential downpours and heavy rains. About 40,000 families have become waterlogged. The two-lane road from Nalitabari to Nakla upazila has also been submerged due to rising water.

Four army speedboats are working to evacuate people trapped in water. Apart from this, the work of distribution of relief by various political parties and voluntary organizations is continuing.

Although the water in the lower areas has increased, the water in the rivers in the upstream areas has decreased slightly. According to the information of Sherpur Water Development Board, at 10 am today the water of Bhogai river was flowing 53 cm below the water line and the water of Chellakhali river was flowing 53 cm below the water line. Apart from this, 65 mm of rain has been recorded in Nalitabari upazila since morning.

According to upazila administration, public representatives and local residents sources, heavy rain from last Thursday night and hilly landslides in Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers flowing from Meghalaya state of India. At that time, various parts of the two rivers broke and overflowed the dam, flooding Poragaon, Nayabil, Nanni, Ramchandrakura, Baghber Union and municipal areas of the upazila. Since last night, the upstream water has inundated various villages of low-lying Yogania, Morichpuran, Kalspar and Rajnagar Unions.

It has been found that 10 thousand families of 27 villages of Yogania Union, 12 thousand families of 14 villages of Morichpuran Union, 15 thousand families of 15 villages of Kalspar Union and about 5 thousand families of 15 villages of Rajnagar Union have become waterlogged. Apart from voluntary organizations, the army is working to rescue the water-bound people.

Chairman of Yogania Union Parishad (UP) Abdul Latif said that around 10,000 people in 27 villages of Yogania Union have been waterlogged since night. Apart from this, due to water on the road, various parts of the two-lane road from Nalitabari to Nakla Upazila have been submerged in water.

Kalspar UP chairman Abdul Majeed said that water has risen in the houses of about 15 thousand people in 15 villages of his union. People are being rescued and brought to local schools and roads.

Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Masud Rana said that these four unions have been flooded again as the upstream water has gone down. He said that the army members are working to rescue the people trapped in the water through four speedboats. Apart from this, food items have been given to 15,000 water-bound people from yesterday till today. UNO said that the work of rescue and distribution of relief materials is continuing.
