The executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) commented that the cyber security law cannot be amended, it must be repealed immediately. Iftekharuzzaman. He said, everyone said the law is voidable. It is not editable. The law should be repealed. I will immediately call for the repeal of the Act.
He made these comments at a round table meeting titled ‘Repealable Cyber Security Act: People’s Expectations’ at Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of National Press Club on Tuesday (October 8). The Round Table was jointly organized by Digital Rights, Citizens and United Nations Bangladesh.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, those who have used the law as a tool of authoritarianism, must be held accountable. Those who are guilty of the order should also be brought under accountability. In the future no law should contain the term cyber security.
He said, those who have been affected by this law should be given fair compensation as soon as possible. Those who abused power directly and indirectly should be held accountable.
In the meeting, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua said that many people have been harassed in the name of Cyber Security Act. The interim government’s chief adviser said to be open to criticism. However, there were cases during Hasina’s time, now cases are being made during Yunus’s time as well.
Article Nineteen’s regional director for South Asia Sheikh Manzoor-e-Alam said, “Our mentality is to harass.” Harassment is the main objective. In making a new law, it should be ensured that no one is harassed by that law.
MRDI’s Head of Program and Communications Miraj Ahmed Chowdhury said, “If we cannot separate the discussion of national security and the discussion of cyber security, then our rights will be undermined.” This should also be kept in mind.
