At the request and invitation of a leader of the Chittagong Metropolitan Puja Celebration Committee, Islamic-style music was performed at the Jamsen hall pavilion, police said. This information was given at a press conference organized at Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner’s office on Friday (October 11) at noon.
Six artistes of an organization called Chittagong Cultural Academy performed Islamic style music at JMsen hall yesterday. When a video regarding this was spread on social media, there was a huge reaction.
Later, the police arrested the two artists who performed the song. A press conference was organized after their preliminary interrogation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Operations) Raich Uddin of CMP gave a speech.
He said, on the occasion of Durga Puja, cultural programs are organized in the evening by artistes in JMsen hall puja mandap like every day. Since Thursday evening, people of Sanatan religion came to the puja mandap and continued to enjoy the program.
Earlier, Joint General Secretary of Puja Committee Sajal Datta requested a group of artists from Chittagong Cultural Academy to perform songs in the event. In response to his request, at the time of the incident, a member of that organization, Shahidul Karim, Md. Nurul Islam, Abdullah Iqbal, Roni, Golam Mustafa and Md. Mamun came to the puja and performed an Islamic ghazal and a baul song.
He also said that the choice of words in the language of one of the songs appeared to hurt the religious sentiments of Sanatan religionists. When the two songs performed at the event spread on social media, there was tension among the Sanatan religious people present at the event.
In response to a question from reporters, Deputy Commissioner Raich Uddin said that Sajal Dutt, the leader of the puja celebration committee, which invited the group, is also being sought. He will be interrogated.
