Israel has been searching for Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, for more than a year. Finally, he was killed by the attack of the Israeli forces.
The information about the whereabouts of this Hamas leader since the attack on Israel on October 7 of last year has started to come to light.
Yahya Sinwar spent most of his time hiding in tunnels in Gaza, the BBC reported on Friday. A group of bodyguards surrounded him. He used hostages from Israel as human shields.
According to reports, 61-year-old Yahya is believed to have fought face-to-face with Israeli forces in southern Gaza. No hostages were found there. However, detailed information about Yahya’s murder is still not available.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said a unit of its brigade was on patrol in Tal al-Sultan in the Rafah region on Wednesday. The attack on Yahya happened at that time. Israeli forces identified three militants and eliminated all.
An inspection of the scene after Thursday morning found one of the bodies to be that of the Hamas leader. After securing the area, the body was finally taken out and taken to Israel.
“Our forces did not know the Hamas leader was there,” said IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari. We continue the campaign. The man, identified as Yahya, ran into a building alone. He was killed after confirming the location with a drone.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said Yahya died while fleeing. He did not die as a commander. Yahya died as someone who cared only for himself. This is a clear message to our enemies.
