Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Moinul Islam said that BCL leaders and workers cannot hold processions and meetings anywhere. If they march anywhere, strict action will be taken against them as a banned organization under the Anti-Terrorism Act. He said these things while attending the sixth foundation anniversary of Rangpur Metropolitan Police on Saturday (October 26) afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police said that the Chhatra League will never be able to hold a rally-meeting again. They will not be allowed to hold processions and meetings. Chhatra League has already been banned. Common people are fed up with the misdeeds of Chhatra League. So Chhatra League will never be able to gather together anywhere in Bangladesh and hold marches-meetings. A few places have already staged fragmented processions. Some members of BCL have been arrested from those marches.
Moinul Islam said that the police department has failed to perform its proper duties for some misguided members. So far, 21 policemen have been arrested for their controversial role in the July movement. All erring members will be brought to justice. He advised everyone to be careful so that no political party can use policemen for political purposes in future.
Stating that new policies are being made regarding weapons, the police chief said, ‘so that legal weapons are no longer used on the chest of innocent people. The judicially important cases of those killed in the July movement, including the killing of Abu Saeed, will be transferred to the Special Crimes Tribunal.
The IGP said that the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is already investigating the case regarding Abu Saeed’s murder. 21 people including two police officers have been arrested in this case. He mentioned that some misguided police officers were involved in various incidents of July murders.
The IGP commented that the police had failed to fulfill their duties due to a few misguided officers at the leadership level before the mass uprising. He said, ‘Now we want to create a police of people’s trust. The posts of Superintendent of Police and Officer-in-Charge (OC) are being transferred continuously. Those who are qualified for this position are being brought.
Sarjis Alam, general secretary of Juli Shaheed Smriti Foundation and leader of anti-discrimination student movement, also addressed the rally. He said, “Many policemen have tried to present themselves for some party without holding the spirit of the coup. We do not want a Bangladesh where one party comes to power and exploits the rest. He mentioned that all the members of the last three parliaments are friends of fascism.
Sudhi attended the rally as a special guest – Manowara Begum, mother of Rokeya University student Abu Saeed, who was killed in the anti-discrimination student movement. Earlier, IGP Moinul Islam went to Babanpur Jafarpara in Pirganj of Rangpur, the village home of Abu Saeed. He also visited the grave of Abu Saeed and spoke to the family members.
