5 skeletons were stolen from Paribarki graveyard in Sreepur, Gazipur in one night. Organized group of thieves dug up 5 graves in the cemetery and stole the skeletons. On Friday (October 25) at some time during the day and night, a skeleton was stolen from the family cemetery of the official house adjacent to Telihati High School in Telihati Union of the upazila. On getting the news, the people of the area came to the cemetery and demanded the quick arrest of the people involved.
Local Ashraful Islam Rajib said, he was walking by the grave site on Saturday (October 25) morning. At that time, he saw the soil of the grave site being lifted and went near to see 5 graves dug up. When the relatives of the cemetery were informed, they came and found 5 graves dug up. No body or skeleton was found in them.
Thieves stole skeletons from the graves of Ali Hossain, son of Hazrat Ali Munsi, his wife Halima, Shahjahan, son of deceased Usman Mia, Tanay Khan, son of Wahiduzzaman Khan, Abul Hossain, son of Ali Azam, from the grave of relatives of Baller. Three days before this incident, Alem Mridha, Hridoy Mridha and Shiro Mridha stole 3 skeletons from the family cemetery of Mridha Bari nearby.
Iqbal Sarkar, a member of Ward No. 2 of Telihati Union Parishad, said that in the morning he received information about the theft of skeletons from the family cemetery of the local official house. As soon as he got the news, he went to the spot and found 5 graves dug. Sreepur Thana Police visited the spot after receiving the information.
Meanwhile, people of the area rushed to the graveyard after hearing about the theft of the skeleton. Several relatives expressed their anger and said that the incident of skeleton theft is very sad. The theft of skeletons from two family cemeteries in a span of three days is spreading panic among local residents and locals. Such theft of skeletons has never happened before in this area.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station Zainal Abedin Mandal said that he heard about the theft of skeletons from graves through a local health inspector. Police visited the spot. Efforts are on to trace the people involved in the theft of the skeletons. No one has filed a complaint in this incident yet. Further legal action will be taken if complaints are received.
