Eleven bodies have been recovered from a car in the North American country of Mexico. Two children are among the dead. The incident took place in a southern city of the country.
The British media outlet BBC reported this information in a report on Thursday (November 7) night.
The city is said to be devastated by violence. The identities of the victims are not yet known.
Officials say the remains of 11 people, including two children, have been found inside a car in a city in southern Mexico. The city is called Chilpancingo, which has been devastated by violence. The mayor of this city in the state of Guerrero was beheaded last month, just days after taking office.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released and the case is being treated as a homicide, the state attorney general said. Police were called to the scene after authorities were notified of an abandoned pickup truck on Wednesday night local time.
The BBC reported that the truck with the bodies was found on a highway in Acapulco. It was a popular destination for the rich and famous in the 1950s and 1960s, but has since become a hotspot for drug trafficking, as well as a place of mass murders.
Guerrero is one of Mexico’s most violent states, largely due to its location on the Pacific Coast smuggling route. Last year, the state recorded 1,890 murders.
The city of Chilpancingo, home to about 280,000 people, has long been embroiled in a conflict between two drug gangs, the Ardilos and the Tlacos.
At least six candidates running in Mexico’s June 2 elections have also been killed. Chilpancingo mayor Alejandro Arcos was beheaded less than a week after taking office last month.
According to official figures, more than 450,000 people have been killed across the country since 2006, when the North American country’s government deployed the Mexican military to launch a controversial anti-drug campaign. Thousands more have gone missing.
