Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, an essayist and Emeritus Professor of Dhaka University, has commented that the state has not changed in character.
He made this comment as the main discussant at a discussion titled “The Role of the Left in the Mass Uprising of 1924 and What to Do” organized by the AFN Mahbubul Haque Memorial Society on the seventh death anniversary of Comrade AFN Mahbubul Haque today (November 10) at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club.
Sirajul Islam Chowdhury said that the driving force behind the anti-Ayub uprising of 1969 was the leftists. It was initiated by Maulana Bhashani. He was its director. The leftists played a major role here. But what did we see in the 1970 elections? Power went to the bourgeoisie. The state did not break, the state did not change. The state did not change in 1946, the state did not change in 1971. The state remained what it was and the colonialism that existed during the British period was what the Pakistanis tried to create a new internal colony like. The struggle was being fought against that colony and the leftists were the leaders of that struggle. But they could not seize state power. One of the major reasons for that was the division, the pro-Chinese and pro-Russian division. We cannot measure how much damage was done by that. State power went into the hands of the bourgeoisie and that bourgeoisie continued to rule ever since.
He further said, even today we see colonization in Bangladesh; another type of colonization, the colonization of the rich. Just as the colonial rulers smuggled the country’s wealth abroad, they did not consider the country as their own, today the rich of Bangladesh do the same thing. So the character of the state has not changed.
The coup that has taken place now has not resulted in a revolution. An extreme fascist government has fallen. This fall could have happened through elections. Then those who are on the run today would not have had to flee, they would have survived. But this coup happened because they did not want to. A fascist government has fallen. Today, capitalism has taken the form of fascism all over the world. – He added.
Professor Anu Muhammad said at the meeting that due to the financing of the World Bank, IMF, ADB, inequality has increased in Bangladesh and there has been commercialization of education and medicine. In addition, our energy and power sectors are in terrible danger. If the World Bank and IMF are still dominating and if this government relies on them and still thinks about restructuring the economy, then where is the change? The desire and energy needed for change are partly in the people.
Former President of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Mujahidul Islam Selim, said that an unnecessary debate is being created among the people. The movement of ’24 is not a revolution, it is an uprising. A rule of social history is that people’s consciousness develops unevenly. Not everyone’s consciousness develops simultaneously. However, during a mass uprising, people with very low levels of consciousness also come forward, this is a sign.
Abu Sayeed Khan was present as the chairman of the meeting. Prothom Alo Joint Editor Sohrab Hasan, Harunur Rashid Bhuiyan, Nasir Uddin Ahmed Nosu, Mohiuddin Chowdhury Liton and many others were present as discussants.
