The United States reiterated its commitment to upholding and protecting the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly of all, including dissidents and the opposition, in Bangladesh. In response to a journalist’s question at a press briefing on Tuesday (November 12), local time, Vedant Patel, the principal deputy spokesperson for the US Department of State, made this statement.
The journalist asked, ‘How does the United States view the recent move to prevent Awami League leaders and activists from holding a political rally in Dhaka in November? What is the United States’ message to the interim government led by Dr. Yunus? And his supporters have spoken in favor of freedom of speech and assembly before.’
In response, Vedant Patel said, we support the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly of all, including dissenters and the opposition. From our perspective, these freedoms are essential elements of any democracy. We regularly convey this support to all our partners, including the interim government of Bangladesh. It is essential for all Bangladeshis to uphold and protect these freedoms to ensure a truly democratic future for the country.
