The chief adviser on global climate change has said that the climate crisis is intensifying and that is why human civilization is at serious risk. People are promoting self-destructive values.
He advised the world to combine the intellectual, financial and youth energy to lay the foundation of a new civilization. At the same time, he also suggested developing a new lifestyle based on ‘zero waste and zero carbon’ to protect the world from climate disaster, which represents his long-standing dream of building a new world based on three zeros.
He made this suggestion while delivering a speech at the opening session of the COP-29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on Wednesday. He said, “To survive, we need to build another culture. We need to build another counter-culture based on a different lifestyle. It will be based on zero waste. This culture will limit the use of everyday products, leaving no waste.
UK Prime Minister Kieran Starmark, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Maldives Prime Minister Mohamed Muizzou, Albanian Prime Minister Idinama, Antigua-Barbados Prime Minister Keston Browne, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Kuwait Crown Prince Sabah Khaled Al Mahmoud Al Sabah, Vietnamese Representative Pietro Parolin, Czech Republic Prime Minister Peter Baila, Iranian Vice President Sina Ansari Hamzani and heads of government from about 90 countries spoke at the COP-29 conference, which is being held from November 12 to 13, titled ‘World Leaders Climate Action Summit’.
In his address to world leaders at the conference, Dr. Yunus proposed to put the climate disaster in a different perspective. He said that this perspective will take us from solving the climate disaster to stopping other disasters. This is a big task, which raises many big questions. I would like to present to you my long-standing dream of building a new world of ‘three zeros’.
In his speech, the Chief Advisor also highlighted the intensifying climate crisis at the conference. He said, our civilization is now at serious risk. Because we are promoting self-destructive values. To lay the foundation of a new civilization, we need to unite our intellectual, economic and youth energy; we need to create a self-sufficient and self-confident civilization.
He said, we, the human children of this planet, have become the cause of the destruction of the planet and we are doing this voluntarily. We have chosen a lifestyle that is not environmentally friendly. And as the rationale behind this, we talk about the economic infrastructure, which is considered as natural as day and night, sunrise and sunset. However, this economic structure is dependent on unlimited consumption. The more you consume, the bigger you become. The bigger you become, the more you earn. The foundation of this structure is the highest profit margin, through which everyone plays their role within it.
Professor Yunus also commented that we need to create a different culture and lifestyle to survive. He proposed a different lifestyle.
He said, this lifestyle will be based on zero waste. We will limit spending to the essentials, we will not have any excess waste. This lifestyle will be based on zero carbon. There will be no fossil fuels. There will be only renewable energy. Then, we will have to create an economic structure that will be based primarily on zero personal profit, that is, social business.
The Chief Advisor further said in this context, this business is non-profit, which will try to solve social and environmental problems. A large part of social business will work on protecting the human community and the environment. By ensuring the right to affordable healthcare and education, people’s lives will be saved and qualitatively improved. Here, young people will have the opportunity to become entrepreneurs. They will prepare to become entrepreneurs through new education. An entrepreneur-centered education system will be established instead of our education system that produces job seekers.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, ‘We need to harness our intellectual, financial and youth power to lay the foundation for a new civilization that is self-defensive and self-empowering. We, the human inhabitants of this planet, are the cause of its destruction. Humans are doing this deliberately and they have chosen a lifestyle that works against the environment. They justify it with an economic structure that is considered as natural as this planetary system.
He also said that this economic structure is based on unlimited consumption. The more you use, the more growth you get. The more growth you achieve, the more money you earn. Maximizing profit is considered the power to make everything in the system play the role we want.
According to Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a new lifestyle needs to be created for the safety of the environment. That lifestyle will not be imposed on anyone, but people will adopt it voluntarily. The youth like this lifestyle. Every youth will grow up with zero net carbon emissions, zero wealth accumulation through social businesses and zero unemployment by becoming entrepreneurs. Every individual will grow up as a person with three zeros and will have a three zero personality throughout their lives. In this way, a new civilization will be built.
Dr. Yunus expressed confidence that building such a civilization is possible. He concluded his speech by saying, “I hope you all will join me in this dream. If we can dream together, then this dream will come true.”
The Chief Advisor arrived in Baku on Monday evening to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP-29. He is scheduled to return to his country on November 14.
