Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has given a statement in court in a case alleging genocide and crimes against humanity during the student-public movement. He gave this statement in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court in Dhaka. He was then sent to jail.
Court-related sources say that former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was produced before the CMM court in Dhaka at around 9 am on Wednesday. Later, he gave a statement to a judge. Then, he was sent to jail at around 5 pm.
Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun’s lawyer Jasim Hannan said, “We have learned that the former IGP has been produced before the CMM court in a case of crimes against humanity. Later, he gave a statement in the court. I met him briefly while being taken from the courtroom. There was no conversation.’
Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was arrested on September 3 after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in a student uprising. The court then granted him a 54-day remand in 10 separate cases. So far, information has been received that 107 murder and attempted murder cases have been filed against Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in Dhaka alone. Then, on October 27, the International Crimes Tribunal granted an application to show Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun arrested in a case of crimes against humanity.
Apart from former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the police have arrested at least 90 people from various professions, including several former ministers, parliamentarians, government bureaucrats, journalists, and other top officials of Sheikh Hasina’s government, on charges of shooting dead students and public activists during the anti-discrimination movement. Among them, 20 people, including former Law Minister Anisul Haque, have been shown arrested in a case of crimes against humanity.
