Although gas has been extracted from the Haripur gas field in Sylhet’s Jaintapur upazila since 1957, the residents of Greater Jaintia, the beneficiary of the Haripur gas field, have not yet received gas. For 67 years, gas from the Haripur gas field has been supplied to various districts, cities and the capital Dhaka. But the residents of Greater Jaintia, Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj, the beneficiaries of the Haripur gas field, are still deprived of gas facilities. In addition, the residents of Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj upazilas in the Haripur gas field are not being given priority in jobs.
Former Chairman of Gowainghat Upazila Parishad Abdul Hakim Chowdhury said that gas was discovered in Haripur in 1955 from the womb of Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj upazilas of Sylhet district and the first gas extraction started in 1957. At that time, Haripur was under Gowainghat upazila. Later, when Jaintapur upazila was formed, Haripur area was included in Jaintapur upazila.
Since 1957, gas has been supplied to the entire country from the natural gas fields of the Greater Jaintia area. However, the residents of the Greater Jaintia area, i.e. Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj, which are the wombs of natural gas, have been deprived of this facility for a long time, 67 years. In addition, the local residents of Greater Jaintia, which is the wombs of natural gas, have not been given the opportunity to work in various positions in the Haripur gas field. The residents of Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj upazilas have been continuously holding human chains, processions, meetings, round table meetings and even going on strike for the supply of gas to the above-mentioned 4 upazilas, but they have not been able to achieve any results.
On Sunday (November 17), he attended the office of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla) Chairman Janendra Nath Sarkar and submitted a memorandum to take necessary measures to supply gas to the homes of the residents of Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj in the greater Jaintia area, which is a fertile area for natural gas, and to get employment in various positions in the Haripur gas field. Among others, Gowainghat Upazila BNP General Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin, Organizing Secretary Joynal Abedin, Rustampur Union Parishad Chairman and Gowainghat Upazila Volunteer Party Member Secretary Shahab Uddin Shihab, and Upazila Krishak Party Member Secretary Zia Uddin, etc.
