Picnic bus electrocutes 3 university students

Three students of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) University were electrocuted in a picnic bus in Sripur, Gazipur. At least 10 people were injured.

The accident occurred at around 10:30 am on Saturday (November 23) in Udaykhali village of Telihati union in Sreepur upazila.

The deceased students are Mozammel Hossain Naeem (24), Mostakim Rahman Mahin (22) and Jobair Alam Shakib (22). However, the identities of the injured could not be immediately ascertained.

Quoting locals, it was learnt that 460 third-year students of IUT University came to the Matir Maya Resort in the area for a picnic in six BRTC double-decker buses and three microbuses. As soon as they reached Udaykhali village of Telihati union, bus number 5 was electrocuted by an 11,000-volt line passing by the road. The students were electrocuted and died on the spot. And the injured suffered burns to their hands, feet and faces due to electrocution on different parts of their bodies.

Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Deputy Director Zakiul Islam said, “All three were brought to the hospital dead.”

Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity Deputy General Manager (DGM) Khandaker Mahmudul Hasan said that the line was of 11,000 voltage. The power line was crossing the road. The accident occurred when the double-decker bus tilted slightly while giving way to a bus and was electrocuted.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Joynal Abedin Mondal said, “We have confirmed the news of the death of three students after the picnic bus was electrocuted.”
