International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan arrived in Dhaka on Monday afternoon for a three-day visit. At the beginning of his visit to Bangladesh, he went directly to Cox’s Bazar from Dhaka. This is Karim Khan’s third visit to Bangladesh as ICC Chief Prosecutor.
After returning to Dhaka after the Cox’s Bazar visit, Karim Khan will hold discussions with the Interim Government’s Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the Chief Advisor’s Special Advisor on Rohingya and Priority Issues Khalilur Rahman.
Foreign Ministry officials said that Karim Khan will talk to the Rohingya during his stay in Cox’s Bazar. He will especially inquire about the ICC’s investigation into crimes against humanity in the deportation of Rohingya from Rakhine in Myanmar. He will also learn about the latest situation of the Rohingya. The Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation Md. Mizanur Rahman will meet with the Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation on the overall issues of Rohingya refugees.
The ICC has been involved in ensuring accountability for crimes against humanity committed by Myanmar troops in the expulsion of Rohingya from Rakhine after August 2017. There is an obligation to sign the witness protection protocol for this investigation. This issue is gaining importance in Karim Khan’s visit this time.
Incidentally, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim last visited Bangladesh in July last year (2023).
