Occupying the beach and building structures has become like the ‘Tom and Jerry’ cartoon. The government collapses and the squatters rebuild it. This is what Rizwana Hasan, the environmental advisor to the interim government, said.
She made these remarks at a seminar titled Payra Port City and Kuakata at the capital’s Purtabhaban on Thursday (November 28) morning.
Criticizing the proposal to build a golf course and airport in the Kuakata project, the advisor said – people come to Kuakata not to play golf, but to see the beach. Besides, mentioning the urgent need to formulate a coastal zone management policy, she said that a plan should be made on how close to the coastal line the structures can be built.
At the same time, she also said that land encroachment is going on in Cox’s Bazar. Besides, shrimp farmers are piping in Khulna and Jessore. Plastic waste is increasing at an alarming rate. Therefore, he said, more thought needs to be given to waste management.
