Professor Asif Nazrul, legal advisor to the interim government, said that India is expressing undue concern over the situation in Bangladesh. Numerous atrocities are being committed against the minority Muslim community in India’s own soil. They have no shame or remorse about it. India’s duplicity is condemnable and objectionable.

He made this comment in a post on his Facebook page on Friday (November 29).

Citing a survey by Voice of America Bangla, the legal advisor said that most people in Bangladesh (64.1 percent) believe that the interim government is able to provide more security to the country’s minority population than the previous Awami League government. We have also seen for ourselves how the people of Bangladesh, including student organizations, madrasas and political parties, worked for the security of minorities during the recent Durga Puja. Even after the brutal and provocative killing of lawyer Saiful Islam in Chittagong, Muslims in Bangladesh have shown immense restraint and patience.

The legal advisor further said that even then, India’s unwanted concern over the situation in Bangladesh has not stopped. Numerous atrocities against the minority Muslim community continue to occur on India’s own soil. Yet they have no hesitation or remorse about it. India’s hypocrisy is condemnable and objectionable.

It is worth noting that the Indian government and the country’s opposition political party Congress have expressed deep concern over the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote and ISKCON leader, in a sedition case.

Along with this, the party has also expressed concern over the ‘insecurity’ of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern in a statement on Tuesday over Chinmoy’s arrest and denial of bail.

The statement said, ‘We express deep concern over the arrest and denial of bail of Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatan Jagran Jote. His arrest came after several attacks by extremists on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. There have been looting and arson in the homes and businesses of minorities in Bangladesh; at the same time, there have been incidents of theft and vandalism in temples.’

Later, a statement by the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry strongly protested India’s comments.

The statement said that the statement made by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on the internal affairs of Bangladesh has come to the notice of the government. The government notes with great disappointment and deep sorrow that some quarters are spreading misinformation after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das on specific charges. Such baseless statements by India are not only spreading misinformation, but also contradicting the spirit of friendship and understanding between the two neighboring countries.
