Judiciary is the main pillar of democracy in Bangladesh: Chief Justice

Court Reporter //

Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed said, the judiciary is the main pillar of democracy in Bangladesh. Its strength depends on the balanced cooperation of two important pillars – the bench (court) and the bar (lawyer association). The bar is not only a part of the judicial process, but also an equal partner in protecting the sanctity and effectiveness of justice.

He said these things as the chief guest at a workshop organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium on Saturday for lawyers who will become members of the association in 2024.

The Chief Justice said, your role as a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association is not limited to being a lawyer only, you are the guardian of the legal profession and an important associate of the administration of the judiciary. My expectation, both nationally and personally, is that you will work with care, professionalism and a deep sense of responsibility, so that the judiciary is able to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.

At the same time, the Chief Justice also highlighted some of the steps taken after assuming office.

Senior Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division, Justice Farah Mahbub of the High Court Division, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, President of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association M Mahbub Uddin Khokon, President of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum Zainul Abedin and others were present at the event.

Before the workshop began, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the 1971 Liberation War, the 2024 mass movement, and the recent murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was killed in Chittagong.
