The Chief Justice has called a special meeting with the participation of the judges of the Supreme Court’s Appellate and High Court divisions. The meeting will be held at 4 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Judges Lounge of the main building of the Supreme Court.
A memorandum was issued by the Supreme Court administration in this regard on Sunday. According to Supreme Court sources, the process of declaring the residence of the Chief Justice located at 19 Hare Road in the capital as a protected monument has begun. The meeting will discuss the issue along with raising a proposal to transfer it to the Department of Archaeology.
Incidentally, the current residence of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh at 19 Hare Road is one of the residential buildings constructed for high-ranking government officials when the capital of the newly formed East Bengal and Assam provinces was shifted to Dhaka in the wake of the declaration of the partition of Bengal in 1905. Built in 1908, this unique structure is a blend of Mughal and European classical architecture.
Although the building has been used for various purposes since the partition of Bengal in 1911, it has been the residence of the Chief Justice since 1950. Declaring this centenary structure as a protected monument will help to highlight its importance and heritage to future generations.
