Dhaka //
Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma is meeting with Acting Foreign Secretary M Riaz Hamidullah at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting between the two diplomats is taking place at a time when Bangladesh is angry over the attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, the capital of the Indian state of Tripura.
Pranay Verma went to the Foreign Ministry shortly before 4 pm on Tuesday.
However, no clear message has been received so far on whether Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry. A source says that the Indian High Commissioner has been summoned over the Agartala incident.
The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission premises in Agartala were attacked on Monday. The attack was carried out by supporters of several organizations, including the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, alleging persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. Hundreds of people protested near the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai today, organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Hindu Sangharsh Samiti is an affiliate of the VHP.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement calling the Agartala incident “sad”. It said that diplomatic and consular property should not be targeted under any circumstances.
Seven people were arrested in Tripura on Tuesday in connection with the incident. Administrative action has also been taken against four police personnel.
Bangladesh has condemned and strongly protested the Agartala attack, calling it premeditated. A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said that the attack has deeply angered the Bangladesh government. The course of events has proven that the attack was premeditated. This incident is a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
