Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjad Ali recently gave an important speech at an event on political leadership, social reforms and police responsibility. He called for reform from his own position.
He said, “If political leaders are drivers, then we are their passengers. If they take us to hell, then we will also have to go there. But this is not the main problem. For our reform, everyone has to reform themselves from their own place.”
At this time, he brought up some brutal incidents of the past. In particular, he apologized for the violence that occurred during the July Revolution. He mentioned that the situation at that time and the instructions of the then government forced the police to be tough on ordinary students and the public.
He also said, “Why should we open fire? We are friends of the people. The police never want to do anti-people work. However, sometimes due to circumstances and high-level decisions, strict measures have to be taken, which is painful for us too.” We do not want to be used by politicians.
Police Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjad Ali, in his speech, stressed the need for accountability and transparency at all levels of society. He said, “Everyone should take responsibility for their work and identify and solve the problems where they exist.”
In this speech, he called for building a bridge between the police and the people and urged everyone to learn from the mistakes of the past and build a better future for the country.
