According to Article 5 of the NATO Constitution, a member country can expect help from other member countries if it is attacked. Similarly, the country can also expect weapons aid from other countries. However, the power to determine how and how much help will be given will be in the hands of the helping country.
And this is exactly the benefit that Ukraine has been wanting to get for a long time. After the start of Russia’s attack, Ukraine has been receiving help from several Western countries, including the United States. But it is possible to get a guarantee of help if it becomes a member of NATO. Now Ukraine wants to walk that path. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already made their old demand in this regard.
Now the question is – will NATO member countries accept Ukraine’s demand? Because to become a member of NATO, the consent of all 32 countries is required.
Zelensky said that the parts of Ukraine that Russia has occupied, especially Crimea, will be excluded from NATO. Only the part of independent Ukraine should be made part of NATO. Is that possible in reality?
However, experts believe that it is possible. When NATO was formed after World War II, Germany was divided into two parts. Only West Germany was made part of NATO. East Germany was part of the Soviet Alliance. It doesn’t end here, the UK has several islands in the South Pacific, and several areas in the Caribbean are occupied by France, but those areas are not covered by NATO. Only the mainland of France and the UK are part of NATO. As a result, Zelensky’s demand to give up 27 percent of its land and make Ukraine part of NATO is not impossible in reality.
Ukraine’s demand has once again raised questions about whether Western countries and the United States are interested in making Ukraine a member right now.
German Chancellor Wolf Scholz recently visited Ukraine. He directly rejected this proposal. Germany says that if Ukraine is given NATO membership at this time, the remaining 32 countries will also be directly involved in the war. This cannot be allowed to happen at this time. However, former NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg believes that Ukraine can be accepted as a member. He believes that it is possible to stop the war if Ukraine becomes a member of NATO.
What does Trump want-
The biggest question is what the next US President Donald Trump wants. Trump has not commented on this issue yet. However, he said at an election rally that if he comes to power, he will stop the war in Ukraine. He did not say by what process it will be possible.
Since the start of the Ukraine war, the Joe Biden administration has been continuously helping Ukraine. Questions have arisen about whether Trump will continue to help in the same way.
The current NATO chief, however, has said that this is not the time for peace talks. Ukraine should now stop thinking about how to make peace with Russia.
