In the last five years of the Awami League government, more than 16,000 people have been murdered across the country. On average, more than 3,500 people have been murdered every year. On average, more than 9 murders have occurred every day.

In most cases of theft, robbery, and robbery in the country, the victims did not complain, but even then, about 67,000 cases of theft, robbery, and robbery have been registered with the police in 5 years. On average, more than 9 murders have occurred every day.

This information has come from the crime statistics published on the website of the Police Headquarters. After being closed for more than five years, the police published these statistics last Thursday.

The Police Headquarters wants to improve the situation by reviewing these statistics during the new government’s tenure. Crime analysts say that the socio-economic conditions of the world need to change to reduce social crimes. A lot of employment is needed.

According to the Police Headquarters, 16,555 murders have occurred in the country from 2019 to December 2023. This calculation comes from the number of cases filed. Usually, a case is filed in cases of double murder or multiple murders at once.

Data analysis shows that there are an average of 3,311 murders per year. Even during the Corona pandemic, there were 3,500 murders in 2020.

In these five years, there were 9,955 cases of robbery and 1,685 cases of robbery. According to relevant sources, the actual number of robberies and thefts would be much higher. This is because, in most cases of robbery, the victims do not file cases, many consider it another suffering. In many cases, the police do not want to take cases in cases of robbery. There are also allegations of taking robbery cases as theft. In addition, there have been 2,452 kidnappings in these five years of the Sheikh Hasina government. And about 55,000 cases have been filed on charges of theft.

The country’s crime statistics were regularly published on the website of the Police Headquarters based on the number of cases. Before the 11th National Assembly elections, the then government filed numerous ‘absent cases’ against opposition political leaders and activists. These cases were filed on charges of attacking police and throwing cocktails even though no incidents occurred.

The newly appointed IGP Baharul Alam held a press conference last Thursday. At that time, journalists raised the issue of stopping the publication of crime statistics on the website. Then, on the instructions of the IGP, information for five years and eight months (from January 2019 to August 2024) was published at once.

Among them, a review of the crime statistics for the five years of the third term of the Awami League government (2019-2023) revealed the above information on murder, theft, robbery, kidnapping. The incidence of violence against women and children and rape was also at an alarming level. Cases are usually filed under the Women and Children Violence Act in rape cases. In those five years, 1 lakh 7 thousand 124 cases were filed on charges of violence against women and children.

And more than 315,000 cases have been filed for drug seizures, nearly 14,000 for smuggling, and more than 9,000 for weapons seizures.
