Japanese investors will continue their presence in Bangladesh to support the ongoing reform process in Bangladesh and contribute to the country’s economic development, said outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Iwama Kiminori.
The ambassador said this during a farewell meeting with Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Wednesday (December 11). He pledged to further strengthen relations with Bangladesh based on the three pillars of peace, stability, economic cooperation and people-to-people ties on behalf of the Japanese government.
Kiminori said, “We will do our best for these three pillars.” He reiterated Japan’s strong support for the ongoing reform process in Bangladesh and the electoral system of the interim government.
Professor Yunus expressed gratitude to the outgoing Japanese ambassador and said, “The relationship between the two countries has always been strong.” He praised the government’s initiatives to attract foreign investment and called for more Japanese investment in Bangladesh.
At the time, Kiminori said, “No Japanese company has left Bangladesh since the July-August uprising. They are interested in staying here.”
The ambassador invited the chief advisor to the annual conference of Nikkei and said that there he could meet the CEOs of top Japanese companies and urge them to invest in Bangladesh.
Praising Professor Yunus’ move to organize an international conference on the Rohingya issue, Kiminori said, “Tokyo strongly supports this meeting.”
Professor Yunus reiterated his call for the creation of a UN-guaranteed safe zone in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, where displaced people can be temporarily resettled after the conflict ends before they can return to their homes.
Lamia Morshed, Principal Coordinator and Senior Secretary for SDGs in the Office of the Chief Advisor, was present during the meeting. -BSS
