Four people, including a woman and a child, were killed in a three-way collision involving a truck, microbus and pickup on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in Bijoynagar, Brahmanbaria.
The accident occurred at around 6:30 am on Wednesday (December 11) in the Amtoli-Bargharia area of Budhanti Union in Bijoynagar upazila. Two died on the spot.
Later, one died on the way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and another died while undergoing treatment. Among them, three were passengers of the microbus and a driver. They were returning home from Dhaka Shahjalal International Airport with relatives who had come from Umrah.
The deceased are – Raisa (11 months), daughter of Manik Mia of Bulla Uni in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district, Fazilatunnesa (75), wife of Lutu Mia of Datamandal area of Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria, Pavel Mia (30), son of Lokman Mia (microbus driver) of Haripur village of the same upazila, and Riyad Mia (40) of Budhanti village of Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.
Local, Highway Police and Osmani Hospital sources said that Fazilatunnesa’s relatives Runa Akhter, Safia Begum and Unu Molla of Rampur village of Madhabpur upazila returned home on a flight on Tuesday night after performing Umrah in Saudi Arabia. Fazilatunnesa and her relatives left for home in a microbus (Dhaka Metro Cha-15-3113) from Dhaka Shahjalal International Airport at night. Around 6:30 am, when their car reached the Amtoli-Bargharia area of Budhanti Union, an unregistered sand truck collided with a pickup (Dhaka Metro No-21-4036). Raisa and Riyad died on the spot.
Fazilatunnesa died on the way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the others were being taken to the hospital in critical condition, and later, at around 2:30 pm, microbus driver Pabel died in Osmani while undergoing treatment. Five people were injured in the accident. Two of them are in critical condition. They have been admitted to the ICU (intensive care unit) of a private hospital in Sylhet city.
The other three injured are undergoing treatment at Osmani Hospital. So far, the names of the three injured have been found. They are Abu Hanif (40), Runa Akter (35) and Safia Begum (60).
Osmani Medical College Hospital Police Outpost In-charge SI Palash Chandra Das said – Two people died before coming here. Their bodies have been kept at Madhabpur Upazila Hospital, their relatives said.
One person died on the way to Sylhet and one person died while undergoing treatment at Osmani Hospital. The autopsy of the two people killed in Osmani will be done here. The families of the deceased are coming, and the bodies will be handed over to them.
