President and Chief Advisor pay tribute to martyred intellectuals

Dhaka //

President Md. Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor to the Interim Government Dr. Muhammad Yunus paid floral tributes to the nation’s best sons at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur, the capital.

On Saturday (December 14) at 7:05 am, first the President and then the Chief Advisor paid tribute on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day. They stood there in silence for some time.

Just two days before the cherished victory of independence 53 years ago, the occupying forces, with the help of local conspirators, killed the country’s prominent intellectuals in a single operation with the aim of intellectually crippling the emerging Bangladesh.

From December 10 to December 14, more than two hundred talented sons of this country, including professors, journalists, doctors, artists, engineers and writers, were brutally murdered. This massacre was the most heinous and barbaric incident in the history of the world. After the brutal massacre, the Pakistani army and their domestic allies dumped the bodies of intellectuals in various places including Mirpur and Rayebazar in Dhaka.

Immediately after the victory in the Liberation War on December 16, close relatives found the bodies of their relatives in the Mirpur and Rayebazar massacre sites. The dead bodies of the intellectuals had injury marks all over them, their eyes, hands and feet were tied, some had been shot multiple times in the body and many had been slaughtered with sharp weapons. Due to the injuries on the bodies, many could not even identify the bodies of their loved ones.

Since then, the day has been celebrated as Martyred Intellectuals Day.
