National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Chief Astronaut Joseph M. Acaba recounted the stories of space travel with students. He shared his experiences of space with BRAC University students through words and stories. The NASA astronaut shared the stories and challenges of his time spent in the infinite void in a program titled ‘From Earth to Orbit: An Astronaut’s Tale’ on Sunday.
Joseph M. Acaba is an experienced astronaut. He is a former US Navy officer and a teacher. He has spent a total of 306 days in space so far. He has also experienced two spacewalks. In this program, students had the opportunity to gain an idea of various NASA missions. While interacting with the students, he spoke about his personal experiences, various topics while in space, the scientific wonders of space exploration, and the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education.
The program was welcomed by Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumder, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences, BRAC University. Scott E. Hartman, Director of Public Engagement, Public Diplomacy Section, US Embassy Dhaka, also spoke at the program.
NASA Chief Astronaut Joseph M. Acaba expressed his excitement in his speech and said, “Many have told me that I am their inspiration; but I feel inspired myself to be among you. Your thirst for knowledge has overwhelmed me.” In his speech, he asked the students to focus on education the most. He said that it is only through education that one can turn one’s dreams into reality. He urged those interested in space research to visit NASA’s website. He said that those who dream of becoming astronauts should follow NASA’s website because there are countless opportunities and advice there.
Joseph Acaba advised students not to be afraid of mistakes. He said, “Being afraid of mistakes is not enough. Mistakes teach people many important lessons. He told the students his own life story and challenges and highlighted how those experiences helped him fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut.
NASA’s chief astronaut called for making our beautiful world more habitable. He said, “Our world is very beautiful. A single wrong step in space can lead to death. That doesn’t happen on our earth. I don’t think any other planet is suitable for human habitation yet. So we should be more careful in keeping this world alive.
Regarding NASA’s future plans, Acaba said, “NASA’s goal is to explore beyond the unknown. If we work together, we can go a long way. That’s why cooperation with different countries is very important.”
Seeing the curiosity and excitement of BRAC University students about space, Akaba said, “I believe that soon one of these students will participate in NASA’s Artemis Squad.” Throughout the event, he answered various questions from the students and gave them important advice. The event was moderated by Khairul Bashar, Director of the Office of Communications.
BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Farhat Anwar delivered the closing speech at the event. In his speech, he encouraged the students to pursue space research and said, “I believe that one day there will be names of BRAC University students in the list of astronauts.”
Among others present at the event were Scott E., Director of Public Engagement, Public Diplomacy Section, US Embassy in Dhaka. Hartman, Dean of BSRM School of Engineering, BRAC University, Professor Arshad M. Chowdhury, Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Professor Sadia Hamid Kazi, and teachers and students of various departments.
