More than 16,000 murders occurred in the last 5 years of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule; on average, more than 9 people were killed every day. During this period, there were also about 2,500 kidnappings. This information has emerged from the crime statistics published on the website of the Police Headquarters.

According to the Police Headquarters, the number of cases of violence against women and children in these five years is also shocking. From 2019 to December 2023, in addition to murder and kidnapping, 9,955 cases of kidnapping were reported. And 1,600 cases of robbery were registered.

Regarding the report, former Inspector General of Police Nurul Huda said that excessive use of force was seen during the previous government. This has nothing to do with policy. The Hasina government used the law and order forces as it pleased to maintain its position. As a result, crime increased dramatically.

Human rights activist Nur Khan believes that the statistics found in the case files are even more horrific than the real situation. According to him, the statistics shown by the police for the last 5 years show that people have died in all types of crimes. A large part of them have been tortured by law enforcement or killed in the name of so-called crossfire.

Nur Khan said that all the kidnappings, torture and disappearances and murders that have occurred in the last 15 years should be investigated so that such crimes against humanity do not happen again. He also believes that if the interim government takes action against the juvenile gang, social crimes will decrease.
