For the first time, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has admitted to killing Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of the Palestinian independence group Hamas.

He said this in a statement released by the country’s Defense Ministry on Monday (December 23) local time.

Katz also warned that Israeli forces will also “kill” the leadership of Yemen’s Houthi rebels. We will strike hard at the Houthis… and kill their leadership… Just as we did with Haniyeh, (Yahya) Sinwar and (Hassan) Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza and Lebanon, we will do the same in Hodeida and Sanaa.

With Katz’s statement, Israel’s Defense Ministry admitted for the first time to killing Haniyeh. He was killed in the Iranian capital Tehran on July 31. Iran and Hamas have long blamed Israel for the killing.

Haniyeh was considered Hamas’s supreme leader and was instrumental in negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza. After his assassination, Hamas named Yahya Sinwar as its new leader. He was one of the architects of Hamas’ attacks on Israeli territory. He was also killed in an Israeli military operation last October. Hamas has been in the process of choosing a new leader since then.

On the other hand, Hassan Nasrallah was the leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. He was killed in an Israeli military operation in Beirut in September. Hezbollah has been fighting regularly on the border with Israel.

The Houthis control northwestern Lebanon. Since Israel began its military operation in Gaza, they have begun attacking Israeli and international ships in the Red Sea. They have announced that they will continue fighting until the end of the Gaza war.

The Israeli military said on Saturday that it was unable to shoot down a missile fired from Yemen and that it hit a park in Tel Aviv.
