Politics will move forward on the basis of July Charter: Chief Advisor

Dhaka //

Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, hopes that political parties will reach a consensus on the July Declaration by early February.

He expressed this hope when he met the new US Charge d’Affaires in Bangladesh, Tracy Ann Jacobson, at the Jamuna State Guest House on Monday (January 20).

Stating that no opposition has been received so far on the July Declaration, Professor Yunus said that building a political consensus on this issue is a ‘difficult’ task. The main theme of the proposed declaration is ‘unity’. The government will only play the role of a facilitator in the July Declaration.

He said, “My job is to build consensus. I am not imposing any ideas. If the political parties agree on the reform proposals, the government will request them to sign the July Charter. We do not know whether the July Declaration will have many issues or only a limited number of issues.

The chief advisor said, “We have a pluralistic ideology here. So the task of building consensus is very difficult. But the process has begun. Once it is signed, our politics will move forward on the basis of the July Charter.”
