The mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman installed in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Sylhet was demolished in the dark of night. Someone or something demolished the mural on Thursday night. Earlier, a 3-day ultimatum was given under the banner of ‘Tawhidi Janata’ to remove the mural.

Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad said, who or what destroyed it in the dark of night. This will have to be investigated.

During the Awami League government, a huge portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was installed in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Tributes were paid to this portrait on various days. After the change of scenery on August 5, the mural was covered with a white cloth. Since then, there have been demands to remove the mural.

On January 9, the banner of ‘Tawheedi Janata’ first demanded the removal of the mural. Then on Monday, ‘Tawheedi Janata’ gave a 3-day ultimatum. The movement to remove the mural was led by Maulana Shah Momshad Ahmed, Muhaddis of Jamia Madaniya Kazir Bazar Madrasa in the city, and Maulana Habib Ahmed Shihab, President of the Metropolitan Imam Association. When the ultimatum expired on Thursday afternoon, someone or other demolished the mural at night.

Demand for removal of Sheikh Mujib’s mural installed in Sylhet Cantonment:

A rally was held at Court Point in Sylhet city after Jumma on Friday demanding the removal of Sheikh Mujib’s mural installed in front of the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner’s office. Earlier, on Thursday night, after receiving news of the removal of Sheikh Mujib’s picture, it turned into a Shukrana rally. The rally demanded the immediate removal of Sheikh Mujib, who was installed in the Sylhet Cantonment.

The rally, chaired by Maulana Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, convener of the Sylhet Tawheedi Kafila, was conducted by Maulana Niamat Ullah and Mufti Rashid Ahmed.

The Tawheedi Kafila’s advisor, BNP leader and former mayor of Sylhet, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Nayeb-e-Amir of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Maulana Rezaul Karim Jalali, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP acting president Qays Lodi, Hazrat Shahjalal Rah. Member Secretary of Tawheedi Kafila Maulana Shah Momshad Ahmed, Central Organizing Secretary of Islamic Movement Advocate Mahmudul Hasan, President of Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Sylhet Metropolitan Maulana Khalilur Rahman, President of Imam Samity Sylhet Metropolitan Maulana Habib Ahmed Shihab, Coordinator of Metropolitan Qawmi Madrasa Oikya Parishad Maulana Syed Shamim Ahmed, Maulana Rafiqul Islam Mushtaq, GS of Alhabib Chhatra Sangsad Akhtar Ahmed.
