The army has withdrawn the camp commander involved in the death of Jubo Dal leader Md. Touhidul Islam in the custody of law enforcement agencies in Comilla.
This information was given in a statement sent by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Saturday (February 1).
The statement said that Md. Touhidul Islam (40), who was arrested from Adarsh Sadar Upazila of Comilla in a joint forces operation on specific allegations at approximately 3 am on January 31, died at Comilla Medical College Hospital at around 12:30 pm on the same day.
The statement further said that appropriate steps have been taken to investigate this unwanted and sad incident. The camp commander of the said army camp has already been withdrawn immediately. In addition, a high-ranking investigation committee has been formed to find out the exact cause of death. Appropriate legal action will be taken against those found guilty in the investigation as per the army law.
According to family sources of Jubo Dal leader Touhidul Islam, he used to work as a shipping agent at the Chittagong port. He came home on Sunday after receiving news of the death of his father Mokhlesur Rahman. His father’s funeral was scheduled for Friday. Touhidul’s mother died about 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife and four daughters.
On Friday, Touhid’s brother Abul Kalam said that his father died four days ago. On Thursday, around 2:30 am, three army vehicles and a red car came to the house. Touhidul Islam was arrested on the charge that he had weapons.
He said, “My brother can never bring weapons. People in our area know about him very well. Despite our repeated requests, they took my brother away. At around 12:30 pm, the Kotwali Model Police Station told us that they had rescued him from a place called Gomti Bilash on the banks of Gomti. He is said to be in the hospital. We went to the Comilla Medical College Hospital and saw his body. His body bears the marks of a brutal beating.’
Tauhidul Islam is the son of Mokhlesur Rahman of Panchthubi village of Panchthubi union in Comilla Adarsh Sadar upazila and the convener of the union’s Jubo Dal.
