The Indian government, in a statement issued at midnight on Thursday, strongly condemned the vandalism and arson at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
In response to a question from the media, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was quoted as saying, “The manner in which the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was the embodiment of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the occupying forces and oppression, was destroyed on February 5 is extremely unfortunate.”
“That freedom struggle nurtured the identity and pride of Bengal. And those who value that struggle know how important this residence was in the national consciousness of Bangladesh!” said the Indian statement.
It also said, “This attack and vandalism is highly condemnable!”
There was no comment from the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi on the message the Bangladesh government had earlier sent to the Indian Charge d’Affaires in Dhaka by summoning him.
