Gazipur, Staff Reporter //
Gazipur has become tense due to the attack on anti-discrimination students. Protest marches, road blockades and protest rallies were held in the city throughout the day on Saturday in protest of the attack. An ultimatum was announced at the rally demanding the arrest and punishment of the attackers on anti-discrimination students.
On Friday night and throughout the day on Saturday, students, including leaders of the National Citizens Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, held these programs.
National Citizens Committee Chief Coordinator Sargis Alam and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Central Convener Hasnat Abdullah joined the program. Meanwhile, the police have detained 16 people in connection with the attack on students. In addition, GMP Sadar Police Station OC Md. Arifur Rahman has been suspended for negligence of duty.
Protesting the attack on students, a protest and meeting under the banner of the National Citizens Committee began at Bhawal Rajbari ground in front of the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s office on Saturday at around 11 am. The participants included Advocate Ali Naser Khan, the central organizer of the National Citizens Committee, MM Shoaib, the central leader of the National Citizens Committee, Arif Sohel, the member secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Abdullah Al Muhim, the Gazipur coordinator of the organization, and leaders of various local student organizations.
After the meeting, at around 1:15 pm, they marched from Rajbari ground to the city’s railway crossing and then took up a position on Rajbari Road in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and started the protest and rally. At around 2:30 pm, Sargis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah joined them.
At the rally, Sargis Alam, the chief coordinator of the National Citizens Committee, said that the students liberated Bangladesh at the cost of their blood and lives. Their lives must be protected. We can see that the terrorists of the murderer Hasina’s Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League are still roaming around Gazipur. These terrorists are still threatening my fighters on social media. If the interim government, Home Affairs Advisor and police do not arrest the murderers involved in the attack by tonight, then we will also have to stand against them. In the past few days, we have seen the game of arrest and detention. A group is arrested, and two days later the court grants bail to some ill-timed judges who are the friends of the murderer Hasina. We make it clear – the judges who are the friends of that murderer must be removed from the High Court, the Supreme Court and every district. Many accused have been granted bail in exchange for money and gifts. Let me make it clear – from today onwards, if any cadre of the Awami League, Jubo League or Chhatra League threatens my brothers, then there will be extreme consequences the next day. If any of my brothers gets a mark on their body, that mark will be on the chair of the administration.
He said, there was a meeting with the administration in the morning. I came there and told them to stop the arrest game. A new operation must be launched to arrest these terrorists. The terrorists must be taken out of Bangladesh. We told them that this Clean Bangladesh operation cannot be like a two-day arrest campaign. We want to see all the terrorists who are occasionally peeking out from the holes in Bangladesh from social media inside the jail within a few days. Let me make one thing clear from the streets of Gazipur – if anyone tries to lay hands on any of my comrades anywhere in Bangladesh, the whole country will wake up anew. Just as we can come to Gazipur, we can also spread throughout Bangladesh if necessary. We have shown in the uprising that the students of this country have been very patient in building the right path. But there is a limit to patience. If those who are working, starting from the administration, break our limit of patience, then you will see another new revolution in this Bangladesh.
He also said, “Let me make it clear – the terrorists involved in yesterday’s attack must be arrested by today. The Home Ministry has already informed us that 16 people have been arrested. We are supposed to be briefed on the steps taken by the administration, including the arrests. We are waiting for that. We do not believe in promises. We will stay here, see the work of the administration. We are waiting. The sit-in program will continue until our demands are implemented.”
Police Commissioner apologizes for the attack in Gazipur, OC suspended
In the afternoon, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Nazmul Karim Khan went to the students’ protest site. Addressing the students, he said, “The ghosts of fascism through which you have gifted a beautiful Bangladesh, through which you have expelled fascism from this country for 17 years, still remain in the country. They are raising their heads. They will not be tolerated.” I want to tell you, the anti-fascist blood in your body is also the anti-fascist blood in my body. On behalf of the police, I apologize to you for the incident that happened last night, I admit my failure. At the same time, I want to assure you that I will not spare them, I want to retaliate for the injuries inflicted on each of them. Everyone who hurt you will have to suffer this injury. I want to tell you that we will find everyone one by one. I want to assure you that we will take action against each of the police officers here who were late in responding.
He said, I heard that my OC responded to your call after two hours. I want to say that those who have conspired with this fascism cannot be allowed to serve in the police. The fascist police that has been created so far, the police must come out of this fascism, and become the people’s police. 16 people have already been arrested. A combing operation will be conducted tonight. Everyone involved in the incident will be brought under the law. A decision has already been taken from the Home Ministry. ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ will be conducted to suppress Awami fascism.
Later, Hasnat Abdullah, the central convener of the anti-discrimination student movement, said in his speech, the Awami League and Jubo League have laundered the country’s resources. They knew that they would not be in the country at the end of the day. That is why they have laundered 260 billion dollars from the country. But we have to stay in this country, so the resources of this country are ours, we have to ensure the security of this country.
He said, since the police have promised us, given us assurances, we want to cooperate with the police. However, we want to cooperate, it does not mean that the police will trade cases, arrest 15 people today and grant them bail tomorrow. We want to say – there is nothing to say about the former Awami League, these are genocide murderers, there is nothing to say about the former Liberation War Minister, Mozammel is a genocide murderer.
He also said, we need to know where we have to stop. We have to improve the welfare of the country, overall development, social security, and the country for the next 24 years. We will build the next 24 years of Bangladesh with our student citizens. If the administration thinks that our cooperation is needed, we are ready to cooperate with them.
Since the Commissioner of Gazipur has given us a commitment, since this interim government represents the student citizens, we are trusting the commitment he has given from this place. However, we will observe, we want to bring those who were involved in this attack, those who have been oppressing and oppressing for 17 years, and have made this Gazipur a haven of terrorism, to justice as soon as possible through this Operation Devil Hunt.
Then around 5 pm, the students withdrew the sit-in program.
According to sources from the police, locals and leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, some people attacked, vandalized and looted the house of Advocate A. K. M. Mozammel Haque, former Minister of Liberation War Affairs of the Awami League government and President of the Gazipur District Awami League, in the Dakshin Khan area of the City Corporation. At that time, the workers of the Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League following the minister surrounded the house. At the same time, a local mosque’s microphone announced that the minister’s house had been robbed and called on people to come forward. Hearing the miking, some people in the vicinity surrounded the house. Later, they caught some people and started beating them severely.
Nabil, the joint convener of the Gazipur district of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, “After receiving news of the looting, a group of us (anti-discrimination students) went to the house to prevent the looting. I went and saw the students stopping the looting. At that time, some elders of the area were watching it. I was telling the elders why you are not stopping them. Two-three minutes after I said this, some young boys came with big ram das and said, ‘Hold on, I will not let any of them stay.’ At that time, they started beating the students including me. I told the students to run and run.
He also said, “I called the Sadar Police Station, Basan Police Station and Tongi Police Station. They just wanted to know for an hour what the incident was. Where is it happening, which street, which house number.” He said, the police arrived after two and a half hours. By then the attackers had left. If the administration had not shown negligence, the students would not have been so injured.
It is learned that after receiving the news of the attack, the police and army members reached the spot at night and brought the situation under control, the students rescued the injured and sent them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
Sheikh Farhad, resident physician of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, said that 15 people were brought to the hospital with injuries during the night.
