We don’t want to be involved in any politics: CEC

Dhaka //

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that the Election Commission (EC) does not want to take a stand for or against any political party.

He said this at the annual general meeting and award ceremony of the Reporters Forum for Elections and Democracy (RFED) at the Election Building in Agargaon, Dhaka on Sunday.

The CEC said, “Those of us in the commission, we don’t want to be involved in any politics. We want to remain neutral.” At the same time, he sought everyone’s cooperation in conducting fair elections.

He said, “Handing over the Election Commission to politics is the biggest reason for the EC’s bad reputation. If political influence on the Election Commission cannot be stopped, the same situation will be created as before.”

Blaming political control for the crisis of trust in the Election Commission, the CEC said, “The EC has such a bad reputation because the Election Commission has been influenced politically. This must be stopped.”

He further said, “It is normal to have different opinions, but different opinions do not mean opposition. It is our responsibility to learn from criticism and correct mistakes.”

Calling for a change from the country’s traditional culture of ‘matching the rhythm’, the CEC said, “Everyone has played the 12 o’clock bells of the country by clapping and clapping. Everything needs to be seen on the basis of reality.”

CEC Nasir Uddin said, “We are committed to holding proper elections. However, this is not possible for us alone. For this, the cooperation of everyone in the country is needed.”

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Machud, Begum Tahmida Ahmed, Anwarul Islam Sarkar, Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah and EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed were present at the event.
