In Bangladesh, violence has occurred in different parts of the country after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government through a mass uprising of students and the public. Human rights organization Odhikar said in its annual report that most of this violence was politically motivated.
The report said that 1,415 attacks have been reported since the fall of the government, of which 98.4 percent were politically motivated and 1.59 percent were communal. In addition, attacks and vandalism have also occurred at the shrines of the Muslim community in some areas.
According to Odhikar, 88 cases have been filed so far and 70 people have been arrested.
The report mentions that 834 people have been killed, most of whom are protesting students and workers. In addition, 44 policemen, 18 victims of extrajudicial killings, 20 victims of disappearances and 83 people have died in prison.
According to the report, 135 journalists were attacked, 27 were assaulted, and 5 were killed during the uprising. The organization expressed concern over the human rights violations.
In its report, Odhikar recommended bringing to justice those involved in extrajudicial killings, disappearances, and torture. In addition, the organization called for ensuring freedom of expression, conducting proper investigations into attacks on journalists, and repealing repressive laws.
