A case has been filed against eight people, including the OC (investigation) of Pahartali Police Station and three police officers, on charges of extortion. A BNP leader named Mamun Ali alias King Ali filed a case in the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Hossain on Tuesday.
After the hearing, the court ordered the CID to investigate the case and submit a report.
The plaintiff’s lawyer said that the accused police members, led by OC Babul Azad, demanded a ransom of one crore taka from Mamun Ali.
Mamun was arrested by the police on October 17, 2024, on charges of vandalizing and looting a business establishment after not receiving the extortion. BNP expelled him from the party on October 19.
The accused in the case are Pahartali Police Station OC (Investigation) Babul Azad, SI Manik Ghosh, Asadul Haque and Kishore Majumder and SS Trading proprietor Saiful Islam Sumon, manager Arif Moinuddin, deputy manager Md. Aman and supervisor Didar Hossain Sajib.
The plaintiff’s lawyer Ashrafur Rahman said that the accused police members led by OC Investigation Babul Azad demanded a ransom of Tk 1 crore from Mamun Ali. When he refused to pay the ransom, they arrested Mamun Ali in a false case and tortured him. Then they looted all the goods in his depot. The court accepted the case and ordered the CID to investigate and submit a report.
The RG of the case mentioned that on October 10, 2024, Mamun Ali bought 20,000 tons of stone from GH Enterprises in the port area for Tk 5.6 crore. The stones were brought to the depot of King Ali Group on Pahartali Toll Road. On October 17, the accused obstructed the activities of the depot and asked Pahartali Police Station SI Manik Ghosh to meet the OC. In the evening, the plaintiff went to the OC and demanded a ransom of one crore taka. But when he refused to pay the ransom, he was detained and beaten at the police station and the next day he was arrested in a case. On October 24, the accused took 30 trucks and looted the depot’s goods.
