Before the start of the tournament, Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto had said that his team was leaving the country after winning the title. However, the team did not start well in that mission. Bangladesh started the Champions Trophy by losing by 6 wickets. India, relying on Shubman Gill’s brilliant century, won by 6 wickets with 21 balls in hand.
Bangladesh, who came out to bat first in Dubai, suffered a terrible batting disaster. Shanto lost five wickets for 35 runs in the beginning. At that time, the fear of being all out in double figures was also raising its head.
However, the team turned around a bit with the bat of Towhid Hridoy and Zaker Ali. They added 154 runs for the sixth wicket, which is the highest partnership for the sixth wicket in the history of the Champions Trophy. It is also the highest sixth wicket partnership in the history of Bangladesh.
Towhid Hridoy scored a brilliant century, and finally retired after scoring 100 runs. Zakir Ali also scored an important 68 runs. However, apart from these two batsmen, no one could give the team confidence. Bangladesh’s innings was bundled out for 228 runs in 49.4 overs.
Chasing a target of 229 runs to win, India got off to a stormy start. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill scored 69 runs in the first 10 overs. Then Taskin Ahmed returned Rohit, but Gill did not stop. This right-handed batsman scored a century off 125 balls.
He was joined by Lokesh Rahul in the end. Although Rahul gave up the catch once, the ball slipped out of Zakir Ali’s hands. Taking full advantage of that opportunity, India easily won the match.
The most successful of Bangladesh’s bowlers was Rishad Hossain, who tried to bring Bangladesh back into the match by bringing Virat Kohli and Axar Patel back. Mustafizur Rahman also took important wickets. However, it was not enough in front of the Indian batting lineup.
Bangladesh started the tournament with a loss of 6 wickets. The team could not capitalize on the opportunities they got due to batting failures and fielding mistakes.
